Wurrook's Top 3 Melbourne Bookstores

Number 1: Avenue Bookstore, Richmond

Location- 91 Swan St, Richmond VIC 3121

If you think you’ve been to the best bookstore, you haven’t been to the best bookstore. As soon as you walk inside, you feel at home. The haven of books is always cosy, and the beautiful bare-wood bookshelves that cover the walls are filled with a glorious range of books. The peaceful quiet of the shop is only ever broken when small children enter and begin demanding picture books from their parents.

As a bonus, Avenue Bookstore runs a frequent buyer program, where any purchased books earn points that eventually lead up to vouchers.

Avenue Bookstore has been named the Independent Book Retailer of the Year 2015 Australia.

Number 2: Readings, Hawthorn

Location- 701 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn VIC 3122

Readings brings the number of books a relatively small bookstore can fit inside to the next level. The many nooks and crannies make you just want to hide in a corner, read books, and never come out again. When I last visited this store, I found nearly every single book on the 2018 Gold Inky Awards Longlist. Each section in Readings (children’s, YA, etc.) boasts a large range of books to please everyone.

Number 3: Dymocks, Melbourne

Location- 234 Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000

This Dymocks’ colossal size is its outstanding feature. There are very few times that I have been to this bookstore and come out empty handed. 95% of the time, you will find the book you’re looking for, and even if you don’t, the staff will be able to direct you to another store or inform you when the book will be delivered.

A downside of Dymocks’ size is that it can make it rather hard to choose just one book. Sometimes you find yourself in there for up to 30 minutes when making a goal to be out after 10.

All seem like nice stores, but they're all based in the east DX. But if I'm ever on the *other side* I'll be sure to check them out! XD

There's a little, cozy store near Parliament Station called 'The Paperback Bookshop'. It's pretty small and cramped, but it never makes me feel claustrophobic, and it has a really nice book smell. It is ACTUALLY overflowing with books. Look it up, you might like it!

Ah nice! I've only been to Dymocks on the list so far, have to check out the other ones! Dymocks has everything you need and more though, definitely agree with that :)
